Powered by Recreation
Grant PUD’s federal license to generate hydropower from the Columbia River requires us to enhance public recreation along the 55 river miles of shoreline that contain the reservoirs of our Priest Rapids and Wanapum dams.
Grant PUD owns, maintains and operates 19 public recreation areas and river-access points, covering more than 2,100 acres along this stretch of waterway. You’ll find walking trails, picnic areas, campgrounds, boat launches and plenty of elbow room amid basalt cliffs, desert sage, wooded coves and sandy strips of Columbia River beach. All amenities except campsites are free of charge. These areas enhance the human experience along the Columbia in harmony with the cultural, nesting, migratory and natural areas we are obligated to protect.
Our commitment to recreation and natural-resource protection dates to the late 1950s and early ‘60s, when our dams were built. Since our current license was issued in 2008, we’ve spent $65 million to improve these areas, plus about $2 million annually to maintain them for the enjoyment of our customers and all visitors to Grant County.
We invite you to explore and enjoy this benefit of Grant PUD hydropower.
