Paddleboarding at Rocky Coulee Recreation Area: Discovering Scenic Beauty

If you’re looking for a unique way to explore the natural beauty of Rocky Coulee Recreation Area, consider taking to the water on a paddleboard. Not only will you get some exercise and fresh air, but you’ll also be treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

The best time of year to go paddleboarding at Rocky Coulee Recreation Area is during the warm months from late spring through early fall. The water temperature can be quite chilly in the winter and early spring, so it’s best to plan your paddleboarding trip for when the water is warmer and more comfortable to be in. Additionally, the weather during the summer months is typically sunny and warm, making for ideal conditions for enjoying a day out on the water.

One of the impressive sights you can take in while paddleboarding at Rocky Coulee is the historic Vantage Bridge. This iconic bridge spans the Columbia River and offers a breathtaking view from the Sand Hollow campground.

Another beautiful feature of Rocky Coulee that you can take in from a paddleboard is the basalt cliffs that line the river.  As you glide along the shoreline, take in the unique colors and textures of the basalt rock, and appreciate the sense of privacy and seclusion they provide along the river.

Of course, paddleboarding at Rocky Coulee offers plenty of opportunities to simply soak in the natural beauty of the area. With clear water, views of the diverse landscape, and an abundance of wildlife, there’s no shortage of serene and peaceful moments to be had.

As with any water activity, safety should always be a top priority. Always wear sunscreen, a life jacket, a whistle, and use an ankle lanyard in case you fall off the board.  (A lanyard is a must, because the river current combined with even a mild breeze can make it impossible for a swimmer to catch up to a board going downstream.) Be sure to stay aware of your surroundings and follow any posted rules or regulations. It’s also very important to check weather forecasts as high winds are very common on this stretch of the river and can often come up without much warning, making paddleboarding difficult.

In the end, paddleboarding at Rocky Coulee Recreation Area is a great way to experience the scenic beauty of this unique destination under the right conditions.

Beautiful Riverside Camping... In the Columbia Basin with river access and a nearby designated swimming area. Campsites are close together, but very well maintained and easily accessible from the highway. No potable water, but there are restrooms that were clean and seemed to be well maintained. Can be a bit windy, but the views, river access, convenience and low price made up for any of the other concerns for me.

Beautiful Secluded Desert with Wide Open Sky...It’s a nice, secluded desert with wide open sky. Nice place for the dogs. A few people came and went throughout the day to walk around a bit but it’s very quiet. It’s just a few miles from where I live so I tried it to practice using solar etc. great cell service but I couldn’t figure out my wi fi ranger. No firepits but we used the standing grill and it was fine.
